SF: POLICE INTERRUPT SUSPECTED NORTENO GANG INITIATION, ARREST ONE
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
San Francisco police officers on Friday broke up an apparent gang initiation ceremony in the Mission district, police said today.
Plainclothes officers interrupted about 30 people, including suspected Norteno gang members, who were gathered shortly after midnight Friday in the middle of Utah Street near 25th Street, according to police.
The area is just east of the city's gang injunction area against the Nortenos, which extends west from Potrero Avenue.
A scuffle broke out in the crowd, indicating to police a common Norteno gang initiation in which an aspiring gang member is "jumped."
Officers then detained nine people, including the alleged initiate, an 18-year-old San Francisco man who suffered a cut nose and a swollen eye, police said.
Jeffrey Almengor, 19, of San Francisco, was booked for possession of a firearm allegedly found in his car, which was parked nearby, according to police.

Driver Shot In Both Arms Crashes In SF Mission

A driver crashed into another vehicle after he was shot in both arms in San Francisco's Mission District Saturday afternoon, according to the Police Department.
The male victim had been driving on 22nd Street near Florida Street when around 4:15 p.m. several suspects ran up to his car and started shooting, police said.
The driver managed to drive a block away to 23rd Street, where he crashed into another car, according to police.
The driver was transported to a local hospital where he is expected to survive. No one in the other vehicle was seriously injured, police said.
No suspects were arrested, according to police.

Shootings Injure Two In Hunters Point

Police in San Francisco are investigating two separate shootings over Friday night and Saturday morning that injured two victims, one of them critically, police said.
Officers responded to a shooting reported at the Double Rock Housing Project in the city's Bayview district at about 9:45 p.m. Friday, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
One man was injured by gunfire and hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
No arrests were made and suspect information was not immediately available, according to police.
Officers responded to a separate shooting Saturday at about 1:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Palou Avenue, also in the city's Bayview district.
One man was reported shot and transported to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
No arrests were made, though police said this morning that at least two suspects were wanted in connection to the shooting.

(03-25) 23:17 PDT San Francisco -- The badly decomposed body of a man was found in a truck in San Francisco on Wednesday and police are investigating the case as a homicide, authorities said.
Police said they discovered the body in a pick-up truck around 11 a.m. at 16th and 7th streets, in a parking lot underneath Interstate 280 in Potrero Hill.
The Medical Examiner's office said the age of the man was unknown. An autopsy is scheduled.

A 25-year-old San Francisco man is expected to survive after being shot in the neck early this morning during an argument over a woman, police said.
The shooting took place at about 2 a.m. in the 500 block of Leavenworth Street, in the city's Tenderloin district.
According to police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams, the victim got into a dispute with another man over an ex-girlfriend, when the man shot him once in the neck.
The suspect, a 29-year-old city resident, fled on foot but was later arrested at his apartment by police, Williams said.
The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening, according to Williams.

Man Pleads Guilty To Robbing Nine banks
SF: MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO UNARMED ROBBERIES OF NINE BANKS IN THE CITY
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
A San Francisco man pleaded guilty in federal court in San Francisco today to the unarmed robbery of nine banks in the city between November 2007 and March 2008.
James Burge, 52, entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Marilyn Patel in San Francisco.
He will be sentenced by Patel on June 29. Burge faces a theoretical maximum sentence of 20 years for each count, but the actual penalty will be determined after consideration of federal sentencing guidelines.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Russoniello said Burge was unarmed during the robberies, but gave tellers notes saying he had a gun.
Burge was initially charged in a criminal complaint in March 2008 with two bank robberies, but an indictment in November expanded the number to nine.
An FBI affidavit filed with the complaint in March 2008 stated that Burge confessed the robberies to police after giving up his right to a lawyer. Burge said he robbed the banks to support a heroin habit, the affidavit said.
The banks included branches of Trans Pacific National Bank, Bank of the West, Wells Fargo Bank, Bank of America and U.S. Bank, according to the indictment.
Russoniello said Burge pleaded guilty to all nine counts without a plea agreement.

Crime Up In SF In First Half of 2008, According To The FBI
The FBI recently released it's preliminary 2008 crime report for US cities, covering data for the first six months of the year, from January through June 2008.
here's SF's numbers, compared with the numbers from 2007:
Violent crime total - 3,388 (a 14.4% increase over 2,962 in 2007)
Homicide - 52 (53 in 2007, though one newly classified 2008 murder would make them equal)
Rape - 102 (up 78.9% from 57)
Robbery - 2,033 (up 17.6% from 1,729)
Aggravated assault - 1,201 (up 6.9% from 1,123)
Property crime total - 17,847 (up 14.5% from 15,586 in 2007)
Burglary - 2,462 (down 0.2% from 2,467)
Larceny-theft - 12,547 (up 18.8% from 10,561)
Auto-theft - 2,838 (up 10.8% from 2,558)
Arson - 111 (down 5.1% from 117)
As for other Bay Area cities, Oakland was up in violent crime too (3,962, up from 3,826), though it was down in property crime (10,946, down from 11,713). San Jose was down in both property (11,263, down from 12,400) and violent crime (1,908, down from 1,932), and Richmond was down in both as well (536 violent, down from 594, and 2,383 property, down from 3,004). Shooting Kills Boy In Hunters Point
SF: 17-YEAR-OLD BOY DIES AFTER BEING SHOT FRIDAY IN HUNTERS POINT
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
A 17-year-old boy shot Friday in San Francisco's Hunters Point neighborhood died at the hospital Sunday, police said today.
The shooting took place just before 11:30 p.m. Friday in the unit block of Northridge Road, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Lyn Tomioka.
The boy died late Sunday morning at San Francisco General Hospital, Tomioka said.
The medical examiner's office identified the boy today as Damija Wells, of San Francisco.
No arrests were made, and no suspect information was immediately available, Tomioka said.
The shooting is the 11th homicide reported by San Francisco police this year, according to Tomioka.

SAN FRANCISCO – A man was hospitalized last night with life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the Tenderloin neighborhood by a suspect who was later arrested.
The two men were seen engaging in a physical altercation at the corner of Ellis and Jones streets when officers intervened at about 7:50 p.m. on Monday, according to Sgt. Lyn Tomioka of the San Francisco Police Department.
By the time police broke up the fracas, they realized that one of the men had been shot, Tomioka said. They arrested the other man, who was found to have a firearm on his possession. His identity has not been released yet.
Following the shooting, the victim was walking around and talking to officers, but his health suddenly took a turn for the worse, and he was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Tomioka said.
Tomioka said investigators are trying to determine what caused the altercation.
On February 23, a woman was killed in a drive-by shooting at Turk and Taylor streets, three blocks from where the two men were seen fighting last night. No arrests have been made in the death of Laticia Hunter, a 33-year-old Sacramento native.
Also on Monday night, one youth was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries after being shot near the Bernal Heights neighborhood.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was walking with three of his friends on the 100 block of Highland Avenue, when an unidentified suspect got out of a car and opened fire on the group, police said.
The boy was transferred to a nearby hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, police said. No one has been arrested and the case is under investigation.

Weekend Violence Kills 1, Injures 10
Fatal shooting caps violent weekend in Mission District

SAN FRANCISCO – One man was killed and 10 other people were injured in a spate of violence over the weekend.
The homicide — at 8:30 a.m. Sunday — brings to nine the number of people killed in The City so far this year. Police said residents in the Outer Mission heard shots fired at about 8:30 a.m. Responding officers found the victim, identified only as a Hispanic male, lying wounded in the 5300 block of Mission Street. The man was rushed to the hospital, where he died at 11:20 a.m., according to police. No additional details were available.
Several other people were also wounded in a number of shootings and stabbings, although none had life-threatening injuries, police said.
Just after noon Saturday, two people in a car on Commer Court in the Bayview were injured when a man pulled up next to them and opened fire, police said. Both victims are expected to survive.
Seven hours later, police were called to the Hippy Hill area of Golden Gate Park, where they found a park visitor suffering life-threatening stab wounds. The victim was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital.
The stabbing was followed by two nonfatal shootings in the Mission District, and two more knifings in the Tenderloin.
On Saturday, two people were shot at the corner of 19th and Capp Streets just after 8 p.m. They were rushed to the hospital and are expected to survive, police said. No arrests were made. Twenty minutes later, a nonfatal stabbing occurred at the corner of Eddy and Taylor streets in the Tenderloin.
At 1:40 a.m. Sunday, a triple shooting was reported near the intersection of South Van Ness Avenue and 26th Street, police said. One woman suffered life-threatening injuries. Another woman and a man are expected to survive.
The violence continued with a 3:10 a.m. double stabbing on O’Farrell and Jones streets in the Tenderloin. Both victims are expected to recover, police said.
Two pedestrians are also clinging to life after being hit by vehicles over the weekend. A driver traveling northbound on King Street struck a man crossing against the light on Third Street at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, according to police. A second man suffered critical injuries after stepping off the curb at Eighth and Market streets Sunday at 11:44 a.m. Police say the man was clipped by the side-view mirror of a passing van, causing him to fall and hit his head.
