S.F. police seek help in probe of 2008 killing

(02-19) 14:25 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco police are asking for the public's help as they investigate the shooting death of a man last March that the medical examiner recently determined was a homicide.
Jimy Reyes-Navas, 21, of San Francisco was found just before 4 a.m. on March 2, bleeding on the sidewalk in the 1900 block of Palou Avenue in the Bayview district. A handgun was at his side.
Reyes-Navas never regained consciousness and died six days later.
Last month, the medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide, based on its conclusion that Reyes-Navas had given no indication he was suicidal and had no access to a gun. It also said his DNA had not been found on the gun handle.
The only witness on the street told police that he had heard the gunshot but hadn't been looking in the direction from which it came. The witness said that when he turned around, Reyes-Navas was lying on the sidewalk and no one was around.
Police said Reyes-Navas did not appear to have been robbed.
He was a day laborer from Honduras who had not worked for six weeks, investigators said. Reyes-Navas had been staying with his brother on Palou, and went out about an hour before the shooting after a night of drinking beer.
"I'd really like to get to the bottom of this - we have a couple of witnesses who heard but didn't see anything, but we need people to come forward if they did see anything and to contact us at the homicide detail," said police Lt. Mike Stasko.

Man Dies After SOMA Attack
SF: 57-YEAR-OLD BEATEN BY MEN IN SOMA ATTACK DIES
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
A 57-year-old man reportedly assaulted by a group of men Feb. 15 in San Francisco's South of Market district died early this morning, police said today.
The medical examiner's office identified the man today as Peter Azadian, of San Francisco.
According to police, Azadian and another man were walking in the unit block of Stillman Street, between Second and Third streets, at about 3 a.m., when four men began punching and kicking Azadian.
The second victim was able to run away, and the four suspects fled in a sport utility vehicle, according to police.
Azadian was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and died at the hospital at 1:38 a.m. today, authorities said.
Police have not released a possible motive for the attack.

Police say they hope surveillance cameras will provide clues into a late night drive-by shooting Monday that left one woman dead and five other people wounded in the tough Tenderloin district.
The slain woman was identified as Leticia Hunter, 33, of Sacramento by the coroner's office. No arrests have been made .
Someone riding in a silver-colored Mercedes Benz SUV opened fire on a busy street corner, Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said Tuesday.
After the shooting, police chased a sports-utility vehicle across the Bay Bridge toward Oakland at speeds of more than 110 mph speed but they could not catch it.
Early Tuesday, Oakland police recovered a burned-out vehicle matching the description of the SUV involved in the shooting. Tomioka said it was unknown whether the vehicle had been stolen.
The wounded were hospitalized with what Tomioka called non life-threatening injuries.
It is not known whether the victims were bystanders or targets.
Investigators are interviewing witnesses, and they plan to review footage from surveillance cameras posted in the historic, yet crime-riddled neighborhood to look for leads in the shooting, Tomioka said.

A man is in stable condition at a local hospital and a suspect is under arrest after a shooting in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco early this morning, police said.
The shooting was reported at about 1:20 a.m. near the intersection of Jackson Street and Grant Avenue, according to San Francisco police.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.
An arrest has been made in connection with the shooting, according to police, who said no suspect information was immediately available.

Two Shootings Injure 4 in the Mission; 3 Critical

Police in San Francisco are investigating two apparently related shootings in the Mission District Friday night that sent four victims to the hospital, three of them with critical injuries.
Officers responded to a shooting at about 10 p.m. at 24th and Capp streets where two men were found suffering major gunshot injuries, police said. The victims were transported to an area hospital and reported to be in critical condition Saturday morning.
Police responded to a second shooting at about 11:15 p.m., also in the Mission District in the 500 block of Shotwell Street. Two men were shot and reported by police to be in stable condition this morning.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the two shootings are related, police said.
No arrests were made in connection with either shooting, according to police.

Man Shot Dead In The Western Addition
SF: ID OF MAN FATALLY SHOT IN FRONT OF POLICE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT RELEASED
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
The San Francisco medical examiner's office identified a man today who was fatally shot in broad daylight in San Francisco on Saturday as 40-year-old Myron Edwards.
San Francisco police witnessed Edwards getting shot at Eddy and Laguna streets around 3 p.m. and transferred him to the hospital, where he died, according to the Police Department.
No suspects were arrested.
Edwards was a San Francisco resident, said David LeNoue, a supervising investigator at the medical examiner's office.

UPDATE: Edwards was gunned down apparently for going to police after his home in a public housing unit was robbed by members of the Eddy Rock gang. They stole items including his TV and dog. Edward went to police, and was subsequently beaten by up to 15 gang members. Police then arrested several Eddy Rock gang members at a Western Addition house, in an unrelated raid, and recovered Edwards' dog. The next day Edwards tried to talk to one of the gang members to reason with him, and he was shot dead. Several witnesses saw the shooting, and 23-year-old Jonathan Brown was arrested for the killing.
