103 Dealers Arrested in Tenderloin Drug Sweep

The SFPD arrested 103 suspected drug dealers in a week-long operation in the Tenderloin. A similar operation in July netted 101 arrests. On Saturday night I guess saw some of the action from the F on Market Street. A guy was getting arrested by 4 plainclothes officers on mid-market. Needless to say it was pretty interesting to the tourists riding the train.

6 shot Saturday through Monday

- Two men shot Sunday morning
- One man shot in Visitacion Valley Sunday evening
- One man shot in the foot in Hunters Point, Monday morning

- According to commenter yeastbeast, one man was shot at 19th and Capp in the Mission Saturday Morning, and a Homicide inspector was spotted at the scene several hours later.

- According to an anonymous commenter, another man was shot Saturday morning at Jones and Golden Gate street in the Tenderloin.

Hmmm, according to a commenter on SFgate, there was a shooting at Hyde and Leavenworth today as well (comment is by Nicolette, at the bottom of the page.)

Two shot Sunday morning

Two victims took themselves to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center at 5:30 a.m. with gunshot wounds. They were then transferred to SFGH. There's no other information. I'm guessing they were shot in the Western Addition, if they took themselves to Kaiser...

Update: Looks like they were shot on the 100 block of Turk street, in the Tenderloin.

Murder Total

San Francisco is at 90 murders now, or 89, according to the SF Chronicle, up from 85 for all of 2006, according to the SFPD (or 86, according to the FBI). It should be safe to say that 2005's 10-year record of 96 will be broken by the end of the year. It's certainly possible that the next highest record, 103 murders in 1995 (according to Chronicle. FBI says 99), may also be broken, which would give SF the highest murder rate since 1993, when 133 people were killed, according to the Chronicle (FBI says 129 killed). That record will probably not be broken unless there's some insane surge in killings.

The discrepancy between my count and the Chronicle's may be Hugues De La Plaza, who's death isn't officially counted as a murder so far, as the Medical Examiner has not released any official ruling on the cause of his death. Thanks to G.W. Schulz of the SFBG for the information on this, which he posted in a comment here.

Also, for those who had been wondering about the body in front of the Hilton last month, it was not a shooting. The victim either fell, was pushed, or jumped off of a balcony on the Hilton. Details are here.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure that the man I had reported as being shot and run over, in the suspicious/unverified deaths section, was actually the robber who was shot and run over by a father-son vigilante duo (he survived).

Three shot to death

Three fatal shootings in SF today

Steve Rubenstein,Marisa Lagos, Chronicle Staff Writers

(10-03) 22:06 PDT San Francisco -- Three people were shot to death in separate incidents in San Francisco today, police said.

The first shooting happened around 1 a.m. Officers found Ramadan Smith, 29, face down in the bike lane on the 2300 block of Post Street in the Western Addition, police said.

In the second incident, Reynaldo Cruz Hernandez, 17, of Oakland was fatally shot while standing at Ellis and Larkin streets in the Tenderloin a little after 4 a.m., San Francisco police said.

Reynaldo was with two other young men. Police believe the group was targeted by three men inside a car.

One of the men opened fire, hitting the teenager. Reynaldo was pronounced dead at San Francisco General Hospital. No one else was hurt.

The killer and his companions fled in the car, which witnesses described to police as a gray, four-door compact, possibly a Pontiac.

The third fatal shooting occurred at about 7:40 p.m. on a Visitacion Valley street, police said.

A unidentified 30-year-old man was shot in the neck at Towerside Avenue and Schwerin Street. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died, police said. There have been no arrests.
