Two shot during lovefest

As quoted from Sfist:

Late afternoon 2 men were shot on Market Street between 6th and 7th. One victim, an innocent bystander who appeared to be a Love Fest attendee, was shot in the hand while shielding himself from a direct hit. The other victim, who was arguing with the shooter, was hit in the hand and back. Police and Ambulances where on the scene almost immediately. A bullet went through the window of an art studio and scared the heck out of an artist at work.

Man shot to death in Visitacion Valley

SF: UPDATE: VEHICLE COLLISION MAY BE MOTIVE FOR SATURDAY SHOOTING
09/30/07 6:25 PDT

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

San Francisco police are saying today they believe that a fatal shooting that took place in the Visitation Valley district on Saturday afternoon was a result of a vehicle collision.

According to police Sgt. Neville Gittens, at around 12:05 p.m. there may have been a traffic collision between two cars in the 100 block of Raymond Street.

Gittens said they believe there were three suspects in the suspect vehicle. After the collision, said Gittens, two of the suspects got out of the car and began to talk with 66-year-old Kam Shing Yam of San Francisco, who had exited his vehicle.

One of the suspects then jumped into the victim's car and tried to drive away, said Gittens. Yam reportedly stood in front of the vehicle in order to stop the suspect from driving away.

At that point, said Gittens, the second suspect shot at Yam, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The suspects drove away in both vehicles.

Yam's car was later found deserted at La Grande and Brazil avenues near John McLaren Park, said Gittens.

Police are now asking for the public's help in finding the three suspects, possibly in their teens or early-20s. If anyone has information about the incident, please call the Confidential Tip line at (415) 575-4444.

09/24/07 11:05 PDT

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

A San Francisco man who was shot and killed Friday afternoon has been identified today by the San Francisco medical examiner's office as 32-year-old Herbert Bell.

Bell was driving in front of 1655 Jerrold St. around 2:45 p.m. when two suspects fired into his vehicle. Bell suffered gunshot wounds and died at the scene, San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens said. A female passenger in the car was not injured.

Police are investigating the shooting, but there are no suspects, Gittens said.

Notice how when there's a murder in Oakland, Berkeley, Redwood City, or San Jose, the news is all over it. Kill someone in SF, and you have a good chance there will be no news, save for a skimpy article that appears 3 days later, on Bay City Newswire and the Examiner. I came across this one by chance, checking the BCN website. I saw the headline, and pasted it into google (rather than pay $20 to view the article)...that's how I found out. Cbs5 apparently had it for maybe an hour before it was pushed off their site.

S.F. father, son seek justice for suspected robber, end up in jail

Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, September 13, 2007
Shooting in Western Addition. Chronicle Graphic

It first appeared to be an all-too-typical drive-by shooting in San Francisco's troubled Western Addition - distinguished only because it was witnessed by a member of the city's Board of Supervisors.

But police now say the incident was far darker: an extreme case of vigilante vengeance involving a father and his 16-year-old son against a supposed street robber blamed for holding up the youth on the way to school.

The 39-year-old father, after being summoned to the scene by his son, allegedly ran over the suspected robber in the family car and then urged his son to shoot the prone man in the street. Authorities say he did. Somehow, the man survived. Both father and son now face attempted murder charges.

One more murder

Hugues De La Plaza, 36, was stabbed to death on July 2nd, in his apartment on Linden Street in Hayes Valley. Originally reported as "a possible homicide" by the SFPD, and as a suicide by the medical examiner, the case is actually being investigated as a homicide. Both by the SFPD and French police, as requested by De La Plaza's parents, who are French citizens. He is now listed as homicide number 56.

And here's an alarming statistic (taken from the Hugues De La Plaza Blog):

Here's a statistic you could use:
From 2004 through August 2006, San Francisco had 253 Homicides; only one person was convicted. (This statistic comes from a Legislative Analyst's report commissioned by San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi)

Forgotten Homicide

On April 15th, 14 year-old Tamesha Tobie, of Stockton -reportedly- accidentally shot and killed herself in her grandmother's home on Oak Street. Well apparently, someone else shot her, according to a report released July 1st by the medical examiner, and Tamesha Tobie is now San Francisco's 30th homicide of the year. Up until early September, when the Guardian investigated, even the SFPD, including the Lt. of the Homicide Unit, had no knowledge of the medical examiner's findings, though the Lt. states he personally regarded it as suspicious all along. It was only after the Guardian's report that the SFPD ruled her death a homicide. Further more, the gun that killed her (a .357 magnum revolver. Think Dirty Harry) has been found to have been used in another homicide, earlier this year.

So that's 82 homicides for SF.

Nortenos terrorize residents in the Mission

As reported by an anonymous contributer at SFist:

Nortenos wage campaign of terror in the Mission: Just as the bars closed for the night, at approximately 2:10-2:30 of Sunday morning (Sept. 9) a group of about 10-15 norteno gang members went on a rampage at the corner of 24th and Shotwell. They literally stopped cars driving down 24th Street and threatened drivers. They also threw rocks and bottles and vandalized parked cars. The gang members then fired several shots into the air, from what I presumed to be fully automatic handguns. SFPD responded rather quickly after shots were fired, but the gang members got away. I overheard the gang members saying that this was their barrio.

Could be that the gang is trying to intimidate people in the neighborhood before the injunctions are enforced. Stay safe out there!

Murder total for the year

This is all pretty hard, compiling accurate numbers just from the news and the SFPD website (which is almost useless most of the time), so here's my take on the murder total so far this year:

Right now, it looks like it's at least 81, which is what the Chronicle is counting. The Chronicle claims the shooting on O'Farrell is an OD victim, though that seems strange, seeing as many people report hearing a gunshot right before the man died...
(I'm putting this one in the list of unverified murders and suspicious deaths, seeing as there are so many conflicting accounts of what happened, the newest being that it was a suicide, either from jumping from the roof, or a self-inflicted gunshot. So my count is going back down to 81.)

If the double murder last week WAS a murder-suicide, than take one murder off the list. There's no official word on that though, so I'm leaving it as it was initially reported: a double-homicide.

You can also include a couple murders that were reported by witnesses and not the news, as well as some murders that were initially reported as suspicious by the papers, but which may have later been considered murder, such as the man strangled in the Haight early in the year, which in news was regarded alternately as both suspicious, and a murder...it can be confusing.

So, the total COULD be anywhere from at the very least 80 to *possibly* even 88 (or even 90, if the 2 hit-and-run victims a couple weeks ago are included as murders, though I'm pretty sure they're manslaughter). The news and the SFPD website are so inconsistent with their reporting (and when they DO report, they sometimes don't include all the facts) that it's hard to tell for sure.

News is (obviously) not reporting on some murders

Well, I have three murders that supopsedly happened, but which have NOT been reported on by any news outlets. The most recent:

A few guests on this site left comments reporting that a man had been shot to death as he exited a taxi at Taylor and O'Farrell streets in the Tenderloin, on the night of September 2nd, just before Monday. Apparently dozens of people witnessed the police and medical examiner photograph and remove the body. And what news do we have? SFgate: none. Cbs5: none. KTVU: none.

Maybe the San Francisco daily reported it, but I unfortunately haven't been able to get one today. It's sad that the best newspaper in this city is a free daily paper. I just wish the SF Daily could get a website up and going...

Anyways, the other two murders I have heard of, but which have not been reported:

- A male victim was reportedly shot in the head and run over with a car, at Webster Street and Golden Gate Ave., at 9:00 am, in the Western Addition. Apparently many people in the neighborhood were talking about this(08/31)

- A man was reportedly shot in the face at 24th and York Streets, in the Mission, after which he got in his car, drove a block, crashed, and according to witnesses, died. (sometime in mid to late-July)

So...anyone know anymore about these incidents?
