SF: CITY MAN FOUND GUILTY OF TORTURE FOR STABBING GIRLFRIEND
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
After three days of deliberation, a jury convicted a 51-year-old San Francisco man of stabbing and torturing his former girlfriend in January 2005, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris announced today.
Francisco Ramirez was found guilty of torture, aggravated mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the attack on 38-year-old Sonya Baisden, according to the district attorney's office.
Court documents said Baisden broke up with Ramirez while he was incarcerated in a separate case and that while still in custody he threatened to hurt her.
On Jan. 3, 2005, Ramirez caught a taxi to the hotel where Baisden was staying in the Mission District after being released from jail, according to court documents. Upon his arrival, Ramirez called the victim, telling her to come and pay for this cab ride.
Instead, Baisden told a hotel attendant not to let Ramirez inside but he was able to get in, follow her into her room and lock the door, court documents allege.
Ramirez then attacked Baisden with a set of steak knives she had bought that day, according to the district attorney's office. Baisden was stabbed in the left and right thigh, the left abdomen and the right shoulder blade.
Court documents said the blades broke off in the victim's body but that Ramirez continued to stab Baisden even while she cried out. He then took out two more knives and slashed her face twice.
The jury handed down their verdict Wednesday, additionally finding Ramirez guilty of special allegations of great bodily injury involving domestic violence and burglary.
Although Baisden cooperated with police and prosecutors, the district attorney's office said she did not testify during the trial.
"This was a unique situation where prosecutors were able to try this gruesome and calculated case of domestic violence using testimony and evidence initially presented at the outset of the case," Harris said in a prepared statement.
"Although we understand the concerns that many domestic violence victims may have moving forward with a case, it is imperative for the prosecutors to have victims' ongoing involvement in order to convict these offenders," she said.
Ramirez is scheduled to appear back in court Tuesday to set a date for sentencing. The district attorney's office said the maximum statutory penalty for torture in life in state prison.

Man Arrested For Series of Violent Robberies

San Francisco police today announced the arrest of a 46-year-old man suspected in a series of robberies and attacks on elderly victims in the city's lower Nob Hill neighborhood.
Dwayne Whitaker, of San Francisco, is suspected of robbing eight victims, all between the ages of 68 and 86, including one woman, since July 11, according to police.
In each of the cases, police believe the victims were trailed on foot as they walked home, and then confronted in their apartment lobbies.
Police said in the course of each robbery, the victims were brutally assaulted.
One victim was stabbed and another struck with a metal pipe, police said. None of the injuries were life-threatening, though one male victim had a non-fatal heart attack while being treated for his injuries at the hospital.
Whitaker was arrested Wednesday night following an attempted robbery in an apartment building lobby in the 1000 block of Jones Street, according to police.
Both the 55-year-old male victim and two neighbors detained him before police arrived, police said.
Whitaker was booked on charges of robbery, attempted robbery and aggravated assault, and remains in custody, police reported.
Others who may have been a robbery victim of the suspect are asked to contact Sgt. Scott Warnke of the robbery detail at (415) 553-1201.

The San Francisco medical examiner's office has released the names of two San Francisco men fatally shot this morning near the University of San Francisco.
Isiah Turner, 34, and Andre Helton, 18, were found shot to death at about 5:30 a.m. in a champagne-colored Mazda 626 parked on the street at 2445 Golden Gate Ave., police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said.
Police were called to the area on a report of a suspicious vehicle with people sleeping inside it, but when officers arrived, they found the two men dead in the car, Gittens said.
The street remained closed to traffic this morning as the investigation into the shootings continued, Gittens said.
The shootings have unsettled residents of the normally quiet, residential neighborhood, according to university officials.
"It's absolutely out of the ordinary and shocking to everybody around here, both the university and the neighbors," university spokesman Gary McDonald said.
McDonald said the sedan was parked in a marked parking spot on the street, between Chabot and Kittredge terraces near the school's academic campus, but that there was "no indication" the victims were connected to the university.
He said the school's summer session had just ended, and fall classes begin in about two weeks.
"It's a very quiet time on our campus," he said.

Murder Suspect Arrested
SF Police Make Arrest In May Fatal Stabbing
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― A suspect in a May fatal stabbing in San Francisco was arrested Sunday, San Francisco police announced Monday.
Officers from the department's Taraval station arrested Carlos Gordon, 38, of San Francisco, Sunday afternoon in the 2800 block of Sloat Boulevard on a $2 million arrest warrant, police said.
Gordon was wanted for the May 19 murder of David Martinez, 41, of San Francisco.
Martinez was found stabbed near the intersection of 12th and Market streets at about 1 a.m., police said.
Police said at the time that Martinez had been stabbed multiple times and died at the hospital.
Gordon has since been identified as the suspect in the killing, police said.

Man Arrested For Raping Prostitutes
SF: POLICE ARREST SUSPECT FOR ALLEGEDLY RAPING PROSTITUTES
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
San Francisco police today said they arrested a 29-year-old man Monday for allegedly raping Mission District prostitutes.
On two separate evenings, Israel Mendez allegedly picked up a prostitute, drove her to a remote industrial area and raped her, police said.
The first incident was on June 29 at 19th and Shotwell streets and police said Mendez reportedly threatened the victim with a sharp instrument.
He allegedly picked up another victim on July 6 from Mariposa and 17th streets and beat and raped her.
Police found Mendez, of Daly City, in his car in a high-prostitution area of the Mission District, police said.
Police said he was arrested without incident is charged with kidnapping to commit rape, false imprisonment, threats and other assorted sexual assault crimes.
Police believe Mendez may have been involved in other similar incidents and anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department at (415) 553-1361.

Man Fatally Shot While Riding Motorcycle
SF: SHOOTING VICTIM DIES AT HOSPITAL
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
A man died at San Francisco General Hospital on Saturday night after he was shot while riding a motorcycle near the city's Silver Terrace neighborhood, police said today.
Officers responded to the shooting at about 7:20 p.m. at Bayshore Boulevard and Industrial Street and found the victim, a man in his 20s, suffering life-threatening gunshot wounds, San Francisco police Sgt. Wilfred Williams said.
He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead a short time after arriving. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of his family, a San Francisco medical examiner's office investigator said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the man was riding a motorcycle when a suspect pulled up in a vehicle behind him, got out of that vehicle and shot the victim, Williams said.
The suspect vehicle then fled north on Bayshore Boulevard. No arrests had been announced as of this morning.

- An Oakland man was arrested today as well, after killing a San Francisco Man when he ran into his motorcycle on the Bay Bridge this morning. The suspect was driving drunk, and has been booked into San Francisco County jail.

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― A San Francisco police officer received non-life threatening leg or ankle injuries during a Thursday night pursuit that ended in two arrests, according to the Police Department.
Officers were notified Thursday to be on the watch for suspects in a vehicle with guns and located a vehicle matching the description around 11:40 p.m. in the area of Powell Street and Pacific Avenue, police said.
A vehicle pursuit ensued when officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle. The vehicle chase was then followed by a chase on foot, police said.
The pursuit ended with officers arresting two men and locating two guns.
An officer involved in the pursuit reported an ankle or leg injury, but the extent and cause of the injury was not released.

Officers responded to the 800 block of Missouri Street, near the Potrero Hill Recreation Center, at about 10:20 p.m. and found five people suffering from gunshot wounds, San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens said.
Someone reportedly approached the victims and started shooting, Gittens said.
The victims were transported to San Francisco General Hospital and were all expected to survive their injuries, Gittens said.
No suspects have been arrested, Gittens said Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the 800 block of Missouri Street, near the Potrero Hill Recreation Center, at about 10:20 p.m. and found five people suffering from gunshot wounds, San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens said.
Someone reportedly approached the victims and started shooting, Gittens said.
The victims were transported to San Francisco General Hospital and were all expected to survive their injuries, Gittens said.
No suspects have been arrested, Gittens said Thursday morning.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) ― San Francisco police said Wednesday they were investigating an incident where a woman who suffered life-threatening injuries was found in a hospital room at a California Pacific Medical Center facility with a washcloth stuffed in her mouth.
The woman, who remained hospitalized Wednesday evening in critical condition, was discovered Tuesday around 8 p.m. in a room at the CPMC complex at 3500 California Street in the city's Presidio Heights neighborhood, according to police.
CPMC spokesman Kevin McCormack told CBS 5 the woman was then rushed to the hospital's intensive unit at 2333 Buchanan Street for treatment.
Both SFPD and McCormack refused to elaborate on the circumstances of the woman's death.
Police were giving out very few details because they said they were at a "critical point in their investigation," said Deputy Chief David Shinn, who told reporters the victim is an Asian woman in her 60's. The case was being treated as a possible attempted homicide.
"There is a suspicious circumstance that had occurred involving an elderly woman," said Shinn. "We are investigating that to see if there's any criminal intent on anyone's part."
McCormack said federal regulations involving personal health information restricted what details the hospital could publicly release. He confirmed the victim was a CPMC patient, but said he was waiting to talk to her family before discussing it further.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A man who went on a stabbing rampage in downtown San Francisco Monday afternoon for apparently unknown reasons was later arrested with a steak knife on a San Francisco Municipal Railways streetcar, according to police.
Police reported three separate stabbings took place between noon and 2 p.m. in the vicinity of the Montgomery and Market streets.
All three victims suffered non-life-threatening wounds, police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said.
Gittens said the motive for the attacks was unknown.
In the first incident, shortly after noon, a 17-year-old San Francisco boy was stabbed on the left side by a man who grabbed the boy's cell phone in the Montgomery Street Bay Area Rapid Transit station.
In two separate incidents around 2 p.m., a 38-year-old Illinois man was stabbed at Jessie and First streets, and a 40-year-old San Francisco man was stabbed in the Montgomery Street Muni station, police reported.
The Illinois man reported that his assailant was walking in the opposite direction and deliberately bumped into him. He then discovered he had been stabbed.
The Muni station victim reported being stabbed in the thigh from behind as he rode the escalator.
As the reports were broadcast on police radio, officers noticed a man matching the suspect description on a Muni F-line streetcar at Sixth and Market streets, and detained the suspect.
The man, 25-year-old Duwayne Hyman, was found with a steak knife in his back pocket and was arrested without incident, police reported.
Hyman remains in custody, charged with assault and robbery, according to police.

(07-14) 11:20 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A San Francisco man was shot to death after a fight early Sunday with three men in the South of Market area, police said.

(06-26) 12:28 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- William Amrull considered himself a free-lance auto mechanic and invited anyone with broken-down cars to bring them over to his San Francisco home to fix.
Amrull's selflessness is making it all the more difficult for his family to understand why the 50-year old man was shot and killed early today around the corner from his home.
Amrull's body was found shortly before 3 a.m. on the sidewalk near Holly Park Circle and Newman Street, near Holly Park. The area is in between Bernal Heights and Interstate 280 in the southern part of the city. No arrests have been made.
As police searched for a motive in the slaying, Amrull's family gathered to mourn the loss of the father of four children, ages 15 to 30.
Relatives had few answers. They said they had no reason to believe that anyone would target Amrull, who was known to everyone by his nickname, Juju.
"That's what we don't know. All we know is that they found him in the park," said Amrull's former sister-in-law, a Colma woman who wished to be identified only as Vicky. "We're still trying to figure out who would have done this and why.
"This had to have been random violence," she said. "He's a gentle person. He leaves everybody alone and keeps to himself."
Many neighbors brought their cars over for him to fix, Vicky said. "Juju was wonderful with cars, and everybody just loved Juju," she said.
Ashley Amrull, 21, of Daly City described her uncle as a wonderful man. "He was just really caring, really caring for his family," she said.
Asked what could have led to the slaying, she said, "I don't know. There could be nothing, like it's either kids just did that for nothing or ..." Her voice trailed off.

(06-25) 21:33 PDT San Francisco -- A member of a notoriously violent street gang was arrested and booked Wednesday on three counts of murder in the shootings of a San Francisco father and two sons in the city's Excelsior district that police believe stemmed from a minor traffic incident, authorities said.
Edwin Ramos, 21, of El Sobrante was arrested at 12:05 a.m. at his home on the 4300 block of Hilltop Drive in the Sunday slayings of Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16, authorities said. At 5 p.m., he was booked on the murder charges.
Police recovered a machete, an assault pistol and knives at the time of the arrest, but they have not found the weapon used in the shooting.
At an evening news conference to announce the arrest, police said Ramos is a member of a violent street gang but would not specify which organization.
"I believe he is, I think he would admit that he is a gang member," said Inspector Brian Delahunty of the homicide detail. Police sources confirmed his membership in the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), which law enforcement officials consider one of the most dangerous street gangs in San Francisco and the country.
The jailed man has denied to police that he killed the Bolognas, authorities say.
The suspect's attorney, Joe O'Sullivan, said his client is a construction worker who is married to a bank worker and is the father of a young child.
He had a minor criminal record as a juvenile and was arrested in San Francisco a month ago on a weapons possession charge, but the case was dismissed after the district attorney's office found there was not enough evidence to tie him to the weapon, authorities said.
O'Sullivan said his client, who goes by the last name of Escobar, is a member of MS-13, an organization whose members contend is "nothing more than a soccer group."
Law enforcement authorities, however, consider MS-13 a sophisticated street gang with roots in El Salvador whose members are known to use high-powered weapons and even machetes and have been tied to everything from street extortion in San Francisco to firearms trafficking.
O'Sullivan said his client was a friend of the former head of MS-13 in the city, Luis Fuentes, who was killed at 24th and Hampshire streets on June 26, 2004. Fuentes was described in the trial as the "shot caller" for the gang in San Francisco. His convicted killer, a Norteño street gang member, was represented by O'Sullivan and another lawyer...

(06-24) 20:12 PDT San Francisco -- The third victim of a road rage shooting in San Francisco died Tuesday night, and police released a composite sketch of the gunman and pleaded for the public's help in solving the triple slaying.
Investigators say Anthony Bologna, 48, and his son Michael, 20, were shot and killed following a minor traffic hassle in the Excelsior district, even though the elder Bologna pulled back to allow the gunman's gray Chrysler 300M room to finish a turn onto a narrow street.
After completing the turn, the driver of the car opened fire, killing the elder Bologna and his oldest son at the scene.
Bologna's youngest son, Matthew, 16, was taken off life support at San Francisco General Hospital late Tuesday and was pronounced dead at 6:24 p.m. Police said they have an image of the suspect's car that was taken from a nearby surveillance camera.
They did not release the image. Instead, they released an image of a car like the one in the image.
San Francisco police Lt. Mike Stasko said that while detectives are moving forward on several fronts, they need the public's help in the case.
"We are just asking anybody and everybody who has information to come forward," Stasko said. "If they saw anything, anything out there, contact us."
Ninozka Baughman, the victim's sister in law, said she hopes someone comes forward to allow police to make an arrest.
"They need to put this guy behind bars - he's a danger to the community. Anybody with any information, please, please contact the Police Department."

Three Shootings Injure Two
- A person was injured this morning in a shooting at Brazil and London Streets, at 2:00 a.m., in the Excelsior District.
- A man in his 30's was injured in a shooting at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, at 24th and Geurrero streets, in the Mission, after another man emerged from a car and began shooting at him, before getting back in the vehicle and driving away.
- Four men were arrested in the Tenderloin on Sunday for a 12:45 a.m. shooting at Turk and Laguna streets, in the Wester Addition. No one was injured, but some cars were damaged.
